How Far to Bethlehem? Norah Lofts 9780899667874 Books
I first read "How Far to Bethlehem" years ago, and was so moved by this retelling of the birth of Jesus from the various points of view of those who would meet at the manger and those who would help them along the way, that I wanted to experience the stories again. My copy of the book was misplaced, and I never expected to find another. I love the non-traditional portrayal of the Three Wise Men, which has a bit of the flavor of their portrayal in the Medieval mystery plays. I highly recommend this story to readers looking to find something special to get them into the spirit of Christmas.Tags : How Far to Bethlehem? I first found this book way back in 1967 when I was wandering through my high school library looking for something to read. I randomly picked it off the shelf and have been hooked ever since. I have read this book multiple times since then and it has become almost a holiday tradition for me. The story lines are well thought out and the characters are fleshed out so you can really become involved in the plot. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to enjoy the Christmas story in an entirely new light.
This book has been one of my favorites since it was first published. Obviously it's the story of Christ's birth but it is told in contemporary prose about normal, everyday people whose faith is real and deep, or totally nonexistent, and how they react to the promptings of the divine, whose variety is amazing. Pathos, humor, awe, and a very believable backstory to the Gospel narratives. And it's beautifully written.
I loved this little book and can't believe I didn't read it long ago. I know the story is not all Biblical truth, but its inspiration is, and it's fun to think about what could be the stories of Mary and Joseph and Jesus, the innkeeper and the wise men. What a wonderful story teller and writer Norah Lofts was, and the story she tells has so much character development, suspense, danger, love, tenderness and joy. She certainly knew her Bible (though she did take a bit of literary license), and as in many of her other books, she shows her knowledge of ancient history, lands and people.
Update A reader might be led to believe that this is all biblically correct. It's a novel, so of course it is NOT all truth. Some examples No one really knows exactly when the wise men arrived from the east. Also, I'm pretty sure that none of the shepherds would have seen their lost loved ones in the heavens when the angels announced the joyous news of Christ's birth. All in all I still think it's a great story.
I found this book among things that belonged to my grandfather, in my parents' attic after they had both died. I had it in a box for a few years and finally several years ago during Advent I picked it up and read it.
I'd worried that an historic fiction account of a sacred event might contain some ignorant distort ions of the event of Jesus' birth as we
know it through our faith.
I was most pleasantly surprised by this tale that uses history and real human emotions and reactions and without changing the literary work of the story as we know it from the Bible, fleshes out all of the characters and tells us where they were in their lives and how they felt while this Glorious Event occurred. It is now an Advent tradition for me to read this book every year to help remember why I celebrate Christmas! It's a great story about a great story!
I read this book years ago, when it was first published, and was impressed by the author's historical insight. Later, as an academic with historical credentials myself, I am still impressed.
Written as a historical novel, we follow the major players of the traditionally accepted version of the Christmas story the probable lives of what are called "The Wise Men," Joseph, and the simple Jewish girl Mary and her family, while viewing the life and conditions of the times. The book is not meant to be a religious text, for those who are seeking that kind of story. However, approximately 2000 years later, we can read this and gain a feeling for that era, with its important people placed in proper historical context.
I was dismayed when I discovered that most libraries had ceased to keep this standard on their shelves and have bought my own copy. "How Far to Bethlehem" is a smoothly told story. Curl up with this book about the middle of November each year to set yourself in the right mood for the Christmas to come.
If you want to get in the Christmas spirit, this book is a great place to start. For years I would read this book each November/December, loving it every time. Then I switched to a , and for several years this went unread. Imagine my delight when I found the edition! This has now gone back on my annual reading list.
"How Far to Bethlehem" tells a very familiar story, but from some very unfamiliar perspectives we get the backstories and viewpoints of Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth, Balthazar, Melchior, Gaspar, and a little about Herod, Barabbas, a random shepherd, and the innkeeper at Bethlehem. If all this sounds like a muddled mess, believe me, it isn't. It's a lovely story, and it is enthralling from the first page.
I am not a religious person (and I say that with no prejudice to those who are, merely to state my perspective), but you really do not have to be to enjoy this book. I would guess that it is helpful, if not strictly necessary, to have been raised as a Christian, only because that would provide you with an immediate understanding of who each character is, but each story is so well told that that may not even be needed; it's not possible for me to say.
If you haven't read this book, please, at least download the sample and give it a try. I think you'll be hooked.
