In Teaching in Long Underwear My China, Ernie Danek shares his experiences of living as a foreigner outside of the major cities in China. As an American entering his early years as a senior citizen, he faced the challenges of teaching for a decade in the Middle Kingdom's public university system. During his time there, he developed an oral English teaching plan for freshman English majors. Ernie observed in his day-to-day experiences the numerous differences between Chinese and American cultures. Many stories were told to him by his students of the grotesque follies that resulted from Chairman Mao's efforts to expel Western and traditional Chinese influences from China during the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976. Ernie's students insisted on hearing his American viewpoint of China's successful launch of a manned, orbital spacecraft. His comment, "It's like watching your little brother learn to walk," produced both titters and scowls. Teaching in Long Underwear My China provides an honest account of what it is like to teach outside of the major Chinese cities and what it means to live as a foreigner inside an ancient culture.

A few years ago I visited China with my daughter. On a tour to the Great Wall, we met a young American who had been teaching English for three years in different universities around the country. As the countryside sped by, he told us stories of why he loved being a teacher in China. From that moment, I was always fascinated by the allure of teaching in this foreign land on the other side of the globe. A few months ago, I discovered Ernest Danek’s book, Teaching in Long Underwear. I bought it see what it was all about and he did not disappoint! However, this is a decade long saga not only of his experience as a teacher, but a deep dive into the cultural elements that make China the unique place that it is, especially of places far from the large cities. What makes the book so engaging, however, is the richness of description, and the periodic humor and irony he found in navigating his way. His adventures are numerous, and the cast of characters encountered both rich and broad. Even if you never venture a visit to China, or to places off the beaten path, this book is a treat. And, be glad you never had to teach in the winter with no heat and not letting it deter your student’s learning!

Teaching in Long Underwear My China Ernest Danek 9781684096695 Books Reviews

I picked up this book hoping for more information about China, as I am planning on traveling there next fall. I was pleasantly surprised. The author Ernest Danek spent ten years as an English teacher in three different cities in China, and he covered a lot of ground in that time. Much of his time was spent in places that tourists don't normally go to, and his descriptions and experiences make for very interesting reading. Danek gives the reader the impression that much of his decision to move to China was a seat-of-the-pants call, and you get to share in some of the tough lessons he learns early on. More importantly, however, the stars of the book are the cast of characters he meets, befriends, and eventually become like family. Danek doesn't parse his criticism of some aspects of Chinese culture, but his love of and concern for his friends shines off of each page. By the time I finished the book I really felt like I knew Lovely Lynn, Brother Daniel, Conflicted Juan, and his "Chinese sons" Wade and Chong. Each of these had hopes and dreams that seem to be squashed by the reality of modern China, although several of them manage to make their own way. Danek also writes extensively about his students, and his struggle with getting them out of their pre-drilled memorization routines and into a more creative style of learning. He describes frustrating encounters with Chinese school administrators and education bureaucrats with a humorous now-its-funny-but-then-it-wasn't approach. Throughout the book, his numerous examples of culture shock and "reverse" culture shock are familiar to anyone who's spent significant time abroad. If you are thinking about teaching in China, visiting China, or want to know more about China and it's culture and people, I highly recommend this book.
What I liked best about this book I felt like I was sitting down to have coffee with Ernie as he told a story about living and teaching in China. He made the main characters in his His story come to life vacillating Dean Li, special friend Lynn, "brother" Daniel, student friends, Chong and Wade who he thought of as his sons and Lily who was his Mandarin teacher and many other friends who helped him throughout his years in China.
This is a two track story the author's life China outside major cities and his development of an oral English teaching plan that went against the expectations of department leaders but worked for his students. This book is a good read for people who are interested in and curious about life and survival by a foreigner in this country of mysteries.
