The Basic Eight A Novel Daniel Handler 9780060733865 Books
I read this book in about 2 and 1/2 days. Needless to say, I couldn't put it down. The way it was written (I believe a reviewer called it an "annotated journal") was wild. It's at times difficult to figure out what was written when Flan wrote her orginal entries, or what she added later. In that sense - I loved this book because it was a style of writing I had never read before. But because of that I kept thinking to myself "wait, what the heck when was she saying this?!" I think there are differing opinions if the ending (which I won't spoil!), but for me I wish it expanded a little more as the details were convoluted, but I think that was the point. I also wish it extended the story passed where it ended to fill in the gap between the real journal entries and the annotations, if that makes sense. I feel like I'm just missing details. But again, I guess that was the point?I didn't hate this book at all, but I didn't absolutely love it either. But I'm pretty certain I'd read it again.

The Basic Eight A Novel Daniel Handler 9780060733865 Books Reviews
As soon as I read the first few pages of this book ( sample, no less) I knew I'd adore it. Handler is one of my favourite authors, and has been since the age of around seven or eight, when his Lemony Snicket books came into my life. This novel proves that he is not just a children's writer.
"The Basic Eight" is a beautifully written, intelligent, and witty book, with fantastic surprises and twists along the way. The main character is deeply flawed, but innately likeable, and her group of friends is one I think we would all sort of want to be a part of. Handler's underlying theme of precocious young people holds strong presence in the novel, but suddenly he is dealing with much more adult topics of sex, drug use, and crime.
I will spoil the book no more, but suffice to say I deeply enjoyed it will definitely be reading some of Handler's other works.
Having read the first eight Lemony Snicket books to my daughter, it occurred to me that the literary output of the author's legal, literary, and social representative, Daniel Handler, might be equally delightful. I was not disappointed. *The Basic Eight* is a gem of a book. It grows on you as you read, building eventually into a book that cannot be put down--particularly toward the end of October in the narrative--and it leaves you thinking about it long after you've read the last page.
Mr. Handler, moreover, is a wonderful writer. The plotting of the book is masterful, and the pages are littered with beautiful, apt phrases/sentences--pearls, one might say--which one wants to linger over--over which one wants to linger. (For example, on p. 280 "I craned my neck to see who this person was, raised by wolves in some San Francisco wilderness and finally escaping by public transportation.")
Some reviewers have complained of inconsistencies in the narrative over the figure of Natasha--I'll not be more specific, as this isn't a spoiler. But, while I haven't reread the book to verify that everything is thus explicable, I think the point is that the whole story is being told through Flan's rather unreliable perspective. Surely that is explanation enough?
The story was told in the voice of the main characters diary therefore it was disjointed and definitely hard to follow at times. A story about a group of precocious and mostly pretentious teens in San Francisco - Characters were all discussed very superficially - no depth to them
It starts as a teen girl diary but written in a style that is strangely appealing so that I found myself caught up in the story.
Story Telling has been described as an Art one must capture attention and lead the listener down new paths, Well the author has doe that. I won't tell you plot or the end, but knowing the author also wrote 'Lemony Snicket' gives one the knowledge that things will go in unexpected paths. There is drama, comedy and more. After a few pages the diary style becomes a normal prose style with quoted speech and narrative joined as in the standard novel form. Read This!
I had read Daniel Handler before but this was the first adult book of his I had read. I couldn't put this down. I loved every second.
His prose is smooth and had me guessing every moment what was going to happen next.
Some other readers who had checked it out before said they didn't like the ending as much. Without saying too much, they felt it had been done before. I could make the argument that was the point however.
I think this needs to be turned into a feature film!
Before Basic 8, I've only ever read his Unfortunate Events series under the pen name Lemony Snicket, so I had no idea what to expect when I purchased Basic.
This is one of THE BEST books I've read ALL year.
I loved every single complex and pretentious opera and dinner party loving character in this book.
The Quentin Tarentino esque tid bits that unravel in the novel bit by bit kept me spell bound.
The dialogue was fresh, the witty conversations SIZZLED and blended a perfect dark humor to make this book a must have and an immediate re-read
It was okay. It was fairly interesting but not as compelling as some of the reviews I'd read. Most of the characters were not very believable, but I think that was because it was told from the main one's point of view. The end wasn't as well put together as other books of this type I've read, as I figured out what was going on. I did enjoy the book club format with discussion questions by the main character. They gave good insights into her mind.
